Liar Liar
10 - 60 MINS | AGES 9 AND UP | 3 - 8 PLAYERS
COMPETITIVE.
YOU WILL NEED A TIMER, PAPER, AND PENS.

Summary: Players use a single card to tell a true story from their life. Everyone, that is, except the Liar, who makes up a true sounding story. After everyone has told their story, the group votes on whose story was false. You can play the game with some people acting only as observers/ voters.

First Round: A Liar must be secretly selected from the group. This can be done by tearing slips of blank paper that are all the same size. You will need the same number of slips as there are players. Write an “L" on one of the pieces of paper and then fold all the pieces of paper so no one can see which has the “L." The pieces of paper are put in a person’s cupped hand, hat, or bag, and everyone chooses one. The person who gets the piece with an “L" will be that game’s Liar. The Liar has to keep their identity a secret until the game is over.
One person in the group randomly selects a card from the deck. Once it is turned face up, everyone will have 2 minutes to plan a story that is in some way related to the card. It is alright to create a story connected to just one item from the card. For example, if you draw the card of the woman in the red dress holding a staff, you can tell a story about a red piece of clothing.
For the non-Liars, the story should be from your life. The Liar makes up a story that seems real but is not. Players may want to write down notes about their story to be ready.

Second Round: At the end of two minutes, players start to tell their stories. They have up to three minutes to tell their tale. The youngest player can go first, with play proceeding clockwise.
Third Round: Once everyone has told their story, the group, including the Liar, votes on whose story was false. As people vote, they should say why they think that person's story is false. The group must keep voting until there is a majority that believes one person is the Liar. If the Liar was caught, the group wins. If the Liar was not caught, the Liar wins.

Repeated play

We recommend replaying this game. If you choose to play multiple times, you can keep score by awarding the Liar one point if they get away undetected, and one point to group members who correctly guessed the Liar, whether or not this was the group's vote. When the majority fails to correctly guess the Liar but one or more people do, both the Liar and correct guessers will earn a point.
